Please note that this itinerary is subject to change, the project requires flexibility due to the weather conditions needing to be appropriate for ocean activities. Sometimes activities will be moved to alternate days to accommodate weather and research requirements.

Day 1: Arrival into Mozambique

Fly into Inhambane Airport on Monday where you will be collected and taken to Tofo and to your lodge to settle in and relax. A short briefing will be given in the evening before dinner along with a walking tour of Tofo.

Day 2: Orientation

Today begins with an informative presentation that will brief you on all you need to know about your 2 week honeymoon experience as well as a briefing on how to get around the local area. You will visit the nearby town of Inhambane to purchase any supplies, experience the local way of life and enjoy a delicious fish lunch in the market! The afternoon will be filled with presentations about the Marine Project and information you need to collect the data.

Day 3 – Day 7

You then begin your open water scuba diving course which usually lasts between 4 and 7 days depending on weather conditions. This is a PADI international accredited course and upon completion you will get a certificate permitting you to scuba dive to 18m anywhere in the world. Those who are already licensed divers may either do the course as a refresher or an advanced course (qualifies you to 30m) or do dives for an equivalent value. Once the course is completed you will have the time & skills to focus on the project activities.

Day 8 – Day 12:

As a volunteer marine researcher, you will be scheduled to go on ocean activities, including ocean safaris and research dives. You will also participate in shore based monitoring and other environmental activities. Entering the data onto our research databases is also a key responsibility to ensure progression with conservation strategy.

Day 13 – Day 14: Experience Tofo

Over your free weekend, you will experience a full day Island kayaking adventure, travelling together across the blue waters to discover the palm fringed islands of Inhambane Bay. You will also have the opportunity to experience the sunset from horseback, taking a ride along the beautiful beach, creating even more memories.

Day 15-21

You will continue with your role as a volunteer marine researcher, going out on research dives and ocean safaris and entering data onto the databases. This week you will be really settled into the routine of collecting data and will find yourself fully immersed in the beauty of the marine environment.

Day 22: Return Home

Sadly all great adventures must come to an end and on your final day you will leave the lodge in Mozambique and be taken back to OR Tambo Airport, Johannesburg.
